Day Of Silence - Nyepi

Considered one of the most anticipated Hindu occasions, Nyepi is Bali’s ‘Day Of Silence’! Everyone must remain inside their homes, villas or hotels without any disturbances which means no travel, transport, work or sound. Even the airport closes!

Nyepi marks the start of a new year and is a Balinese tradition to cleanse the island from the previous year’s omens or misdoings.  For the Balinese, meditation and blessings are practiced where foreigners are able to take part in the festivities that follow such as the Nyepi Eve parade and the Ngembak Geni known as the festival of smooches as youths are showered in water by villagers.

If you’re heading down to visit holistic temples, then wait till mid-late March as thousands of Balinese Hindus welcome the tenth full moon through prayer. Various temples across Bali, including the sacred Pura Besakih, invite the local community for a communal Prayer whereby they ask Hindu gods for blessings. Foreigners are able to witness the temple in all its glory, decorated in colourful ribbons and flags.

The religious ritual comes to a close with those practicing walking into the ‘holy waters’ to encourage guidance and good fortune for their families.
